9 Early Signs of Autism in Children Every Parent Should Know
1. Limited Eye Contact
Children with autism may avoid or struggle to maintain eye contact during conversations, playtime, or everyday interactions.
2. Speech Delays or Unusual Language
Many kids with autism speak later than their peers. Some may not speak at all, while others may repeat words or phrases (echolalia) without using them meaningfully.
3. Prefers Being Alone
Rather than seeking out friends or engaging with others, autistic children may prefer solitary play or seem uninterested in social interactions.
4. Repetitive Movements or Behaviors
You might notice behaviors like hand-flapping, rocking, spinning, or repeatedly lining up toys. These are called stimming behaviors and help regulate emotions.
5. Strong Attachment to Routines
Children on the spectrum often resist changes in routine. Even a small change, like taking a different route to school, can cause distress.
6. Intense or Unusual Interests
Autistic children may develop intense focus on specific subjects or objects, like trains, numbers, or spinning wheels—often talking about them obsessively.
7. Limited Use of Gestures or Facial Expressions
While many toddlers naturally point, wave, or use facial expressions to communicate, children with autism may not rely on these cues.
8. Sensory Sensitivities
Children may be over- or under-sensitive to sounds, textures, lights, or smells. For example, they might cover their ears when a vacuum runs or avoid certain fabrics.
9. Unusual Ways of Playing
Instead of imaginative play, autistic children might focus on parts of a toy (like wheels) or repeat the same play sequence again and again.
